Are you going to
Loppet?
If you tried to find the
meaning of the word "Loppet" in a dictionary you could be forgiven
if you were not successful. In fact, a search on the Internet of the
world's numerous Loppet websites proved fruitless as well.
As much as the term is
comfortably entrenched in a cross-country skier's vernacular, this
humble webmaster needed to seek out Viking Ski Club President Erik
Vikander to find the answer.
The term, says the
Scandinavian born skier, comes from the word "Lopp," which means a
race. The letters "et," he adds, put “Lo
pp”
in its definite form, making Loppet equivalent to “the race” in
English.
So, if one wishes to be
grammatically correct, you would say, "Are you going to Loppet?" as
Erik does .
But, Erik assures that no
one will be offended if you say you are coming to the
Loppet, as long as you enjoy the ski trails that await you.
We look forward to seeing
you!
